It will be a place to present and/or market stereo-3d-photography related products and solutions that don't depend on fashion and trends.

Meaning of sustainable for stereo-3d photography

The main task to be addressed by dualcam.net is making stereo-3d-photography constantly available to those interested in it - independently of the interest (or lack of it) of major equipment producers in this domain.
In contrast to regular ("planar") photography, its stereo-3d cousin proved to be a small niche market, thus making it unattractive for modern equipment manufacturers.
Once in ~50 years there comes an attempt to push the stereo-3d into mainstream; we are calling this a "stereobum". Great new cameras and viewing equipment appear in abundance, making contemporary stereo-3d enthusiasts happy and feeling proud in being the ones who proved to the whole world how beautiful stereo-3d is.
I'd imagine a stereo-photographer of 1940-s/1950-s having two bold beliefs:

  1. After all the suffering brought by the 2nd World War, the humankind learned the lesson, and future generations will enjoy constantly-peaceful life.
  2. Our stereo-cameras, projectors, etc. become so good and so accessible, they are going to stay so for that same future generations.

But in practice … in 2024 my work on Anaglyph Hald Generator and this site at my home in Haifa (Israel) was interrupted by sirens several times a day. A similar outcome for the other belief too.

So, in my view, a stereo-3d solution is sustainable if it doesn't rely on complex specialized (for 3d) equipment or specialized proprietary software. The former gets discontinued with the end of stereobum, and the latter may not run on newer computers and/or operating systems.
Drawing from the experience of the era between stereobums of 1950-s and 2000-s, we may still count on availability of basic supplies - like polarization filters, color filters, silver materials suitable for projection screens, etc. When it comes to software, open source may come to the rescue - the beloved programs/tools could be adopted/ported to newer environments if the demand is sufficient.

In the end of the day, a good photo may and must outlive any tech trend, and if you take it today, you or your kids should be able to view it after 50 years or even more.

Anaglyph Hald Generator

My first contribution to the field of stereo-3d photography is Anaglyph Hald Generator - an open-source software to create color-lookup-tables that optimize stereopairs for being viewed as full-color red-cyan anaglyphs.

---- A stereopair and an anaglyph that could be made of it ----

There used to be two methods of overcoming retinal-rivalry in red-cyan color anaglyphs - half-color and Dubois - that were documented and had implementation accessible to photographers. The Anaglyph Hald Generator comes as the third…
